Times Square. They say even more people are expected to show up for the drop of the [new and improved!!!!] ball this year than last year. Perhaps such is the state of things. It makes sense that this year, having continued the downward spiral of economy and policy,  has broken even more spirits than did the year preceding it, and so the depredated masses gather in clustered crowds, huddling together and casting a pathetic, collective upwards stare at the bright shining ball of hope. Hoping, that with its drop, the symbolic start of a new year, comes the promise of new prosperity. I wish that ball would come unhinged on its descent, accelerating, wildly crashing into the base and shattering itself and its illusion of hope right along with it in a deafening explosion. Bright, shimmering bits of glass would careen towards the widely exposed eyes of the desolate. They would be poetically blinded by hope.
