You know, no one does this anymore. They all hit their thirties, made an Instagram, and got on with it. Time marched forward, and — somewhere along the way — this form of expression was lost. Yet again, and likely forever, I am the anachronism stuck in the past, sucked into the vacuum left by a world that moved on. Here I linger, the hermit crab making myself at home in the abandoned shells that others either outgrew and left behind, or merely cast off because they were no longer fashionable. But my childhood was defined by handed-down possessions and hands-off parenting, so this solitary secondhand existence is simply second nature at this point.
And what of you? Certainly, coming from similarly humble beginnings, you are no stranger to this custom. What difference is there between us other than the fact that it is I who clings to the past, while, diametrically, it is the past that clings to you? Either way, we haunt the same deserted domain, picking our lonely way through the discarded detritus. So why go it alone separately? Let's be alone together. Let's see if we're that strong.
