The Police - Roxanne

Clearly I can hear the steady crash of waves on the rocks. Blustering winds beget tumultuous waters, and through the sparse trees and thick haze of fog I can barely make out the choppy, darkened breakers.
I turn away from the gloomy scene viewed through parted curtains, resting my chin on my arm and gazing at a screen. My free hand moves a pointer lazily, and as I browse page to page, a reddened number catches my attention. Brow raised, I click.
"I thought there was only one..." I say to myself as I stare at the revolving blue circle. Waves continue their deafening collisions, punctuating each waiting moment.
A window turns white, and then returns to black. I analyze the letters. More surfs sound off; my ears twitch.
Involuntarily flutters begin in my chest, and ventricles pulse wildly, pumping blood with violent fervor. My fingers tingle and turn cold, moving spastically though I've lost all other feeling in them. Breaths turn shallow, lungs shuddering and refusing entrance. I stare ahead unblinking.
My mouth fills and I force a swallow, the jumbled clusters of electrons sparking and flying as I look at the message and consider the motivation. "So many possibilities..." I think. "I can't fathom..."
Butterflies bat their wings playfully, slapping them along my stomach in tender blows. Their small legs poke and prod at it, then begin to tug and heave. Each insect takes hold of a section and flaps powerfully in a unique direction, stretching and turning it over in every which way.
Thunder rumbles overhead, and the sheer volume elicits a thick coating of goose bumps across my entire body. Rain pelts the windows noisily as the thunder subsides, as if to boast their own disruptiveness.
Indecisive, I force both hands to the keyboard and begin to type. “Clearly I can hear…”
